GEO-DASHBOARD: Modern Approach to Business Intelligence

Gone are the days when during planning activities, big huge maps from cupboards were rolled out on map tables to view the regions of interest and to carry out the analysis. In the era of computers and search, people have developed a habit to query the system frequently, and expect the results on the computer screen in the fraction of second. Besides they also want to visualize/ simulate/ predict the nth level logic, on selecting a parameter of their system. Setting up of this test bench to carry out their analysis has resulted in, what is termed as “Geo-Dashboard”, as software enterprise model.

Geo-Dashboard Developed By Annova Technologies

The geographic context and the localtion-based relationships helps one to analyze and monitor his/her data more fully and efficiently. Grouping of data by region or area helps one to synthesize and drill down to details as needed. Critical business needs can be met quickly by understanding the key performance indices, integrated with these dashboards. Annova Technologies Private Limited is currently involved in providing data rich Geo-Dashboards to its clients as an innovative tool to carry out their analytics based operations, on their regular changing dataset. Annova's Geo-Dashboard would enable its clients to carry out real-time monitoring, uncover trends and relationships and to understand its clientele effectively.

TABLET PCs: A Catalyst for GIS Industry

Tablet PCs seems to be the immediate solution/ alternative for speeding up the GIS industry processes. Tablet PC, which lies between a mobile and computer/ laptop segments, and serve the purpose for both and has already made its presense felt in the Indian Market. People have already started using their tablets instead of pen-paper, which is always in their pockets. These tablet PCs are equipped with innumerable free applications, GPS and priced between a mobile and laptop, are being the targets for major software companies, as a platform for their softwares.

Choice between Mobile, Tablet, Laptop/ PC

For GIS industry, tablet has turned out to be a catalyst, for its slow moving tasks which include field work. For GIS professionals, it is like taking their systems to field and checking the quality of the data simultaneously while collecting it. Hence tablet PC turns out to be digital camera (as against conventional photography camera) for the GIS industry. During a survey, if geodetic accuracy is not the aim, then a tablet PC connected to the internet, serves the purpose of a field book, GPS and its accessories, GIS software and a PC (for conversion, uploading and other processes).

Presently GIS software companies are supporting the use of tablets, by rolling out the free, lighter mobile versions of their softwares, compatible with major mobile operating systems.

Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme- India

India joined the international consortium of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) as an Associate Member in 2008-09. On behalf of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa has been designated as the nodal agency to deal with various facets of the IODP program in India. Since joining this consortium, India has been significantly involved in this international endeavour including representations on various panels of the Science Advisory Structure (SAS).

Based on our Science Plan, and a national level discussion during the Asia Oceania Geosciences Meeting (AOGS), Hyderabad, a scientific proposal for deep sea drilling in the Arabian Sea was developed and submitted to the IODP consortium to recover records from the sea-floor and beneath to understand past tectono-climatic unknowns.

Vessels performing the drilling tasks

IODP-India hosted an international workshop during October 17-18, 2011 on scientific drilling in the Indian Ocean sector in association with Australia and New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC) and IODP-MI. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) is an international marine research program. The program uses heavy drilling equipment mounted aboard ships to monitor and sample sub-seafloor environments. With this research, the IODP documents environmental change, Earth processes and effects, the biosphere, solid earth cycles, and geodynamics. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) brings together hundreds of scientists from different countries and scientific disciplines to conduct investigations of the Earth deep below the sea-floor. IODP gives scientists the opportunity to: 1. recover geological records and rock samples; 2. investigate and document ocean- and climate-change through time; 3. explore the presence of primitive life below the seafloor; 4. verify remote, near-seafloor observatories; 5. gain understanding of how tectonic plates move and recycle themselves into the deep mantle
